Rock Art

Much has been written about the phenomenon of the "trek bokke" (migratory buck). I have books in the SMIDSWINKEL RESTAURANT & INFO CENTRE recounting experiences with herds of springbok of a million and more trekking to new pastures. This must have been a most pleasurable sight to the Bushman people who lived in this area in perfect harmony with their environment. This said it is understandable why so many eland and springbok are depicted on the large ironstone boulders.

Approximately 40 km from Van Wyksvlei, high above the surrounding landscape, the Bushman people had their most beautiful open-air studio. There they chiselled out their rock etchings of hunters, lions, elephants, eland and the other game that roamed the plains in vast herds.

If you wish to visit the petroglyph sites at Springbok and other sights in the vicinity of Van Wyksvlei please contact me and I will gladly assist.

PS: At Van Wyksvlei you will be able to buy some of the finest Springbok biltong in South Africa. Believe me, I've been there.
