Nieuwoudtville is second only to Clanwilliam when it comes to the production of Rooibos Tea - South Africa's most successful commercial tea development using an indigenous plant endemic to the Cape Fynbos system. At Nieuwoudtville the Fynbos hugs the escarpment of the Bokkeveld Plateau, with the northernmost extremity of the Fynbos ending just beyond Nieuwoudtville. The fields of Rooibos Tea bushes can be seen to the left and right of the road (R27) just after cresting Vanrhynspas or when traveling South, just before you descend the pass. The Tea is harvested and treated between January and March, and the processing factory is well worth a visit at this time. |
